Terri & Kevin Janison

From 89134 Magazine, July 2007

They say that the family that plays together stays together. In the case of 89144 residents Terri and Kevin Janison, playing together means volunteering their time and spreading their own brand of sunshine to help others throughout the community.

While Terri claims to be a "stay at home mom," she has been a member of the Clark County School Board of Trustees since 2005 and is also a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). As a CASA, she has had the opportunity to develop a caring, positive relationship with a child who has been removed from the home because of abuse, neglect, or abandonment. In 2004,she won an Outstanding CASA Award for her efforts.

Kevin is an Emmy winning weather newscaster and has held the National Weather Association Seal of Approval since 1985. He was responsible for building the Neighborhood Weather Network, which placed weather stations and provided curriculum in meteorology in over 100 schools throughout the region. In 2003 Kevin was named "Humanitarian of the Year" by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, was recognized as a "Citizen of Distinction" in 2005, was named the National Weather Association Broadcaster of the Year in 2006, and received his fifth Emmy nomination for his on-air work last year.

Together, they are parents of daughter Taylor and son Colin. While the couple lived around the country for Kevin's various TV weather positions, the family has made Las Vegas their home for the past 13 years. "I'm very proud of Terri, whom I've dragged around the country for my weather jobs. She's been successful at instigating positive change everywhere we've lived. Our kids feed off that and have also become very involved," says Kevin. "The needs in our community are so great and if everyone gave just a little bit of time to help others, I believe it would make our community so much stronger, "Terri adds. "We have always had our children participate with us when we do fundraising events for charities. My mom was a volunteer as I grew up and she was definitely my inspiration."

The couple and their family have lent their support to local organizations including Shade Tree Shelter, Children's Heart Foundation, the PTA and the Southern Nevada Domestic Violence Task Force. "I like the fact that these organizations are centered around helping children and women," says Terri. "Of all the volunteer work I have done over the years, being a CASA is the hardest but most rewarding. The children in the foster care system need someone to be looking out just for them. The needs in our community are so great, especially when it comes to children."

Kevin lends on-air assistance during the Muscular Dystrophy Association drives as well as giving of his time to D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education),the highly acclaimed program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. He makes 110 school visits a year giving presentations on weather, reading and speaking at graduations and D.A.R.E. assemblies. "I particularly enjoy going to the schools and giving weather presentations, being involved with D.A.R.E. graduations and reading. There are so many success stories within our local schools. It's just an absolute pleasure to come in contact with so many of our future community leaders each year," he said. An advocate of child literacy, Kevin also recently published his first children's book, "Deputy Dorkface," which is based on a bedtime story he told his children about a town where nobody takes a bath. "I would tell my kids the story to make them laugh. They really looked forward to it.

"So what's in the forecast for the family that's always on the go? For Terri, it is running as she's training for her eighth marathon. For Kevin it is tennis and tornado chasing. Together, they'll continue to give hope to those in need. Kevin sums it up by saying, "If I can have any impact at all, than I feel that I have given something back.
